50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NAMING OF THE SUNSHINE COAST WOMEN’S CUP
Here on the Sunshine Coast we love our sport. With women’s AFL exploding all around the country, what better way to celebrate a major milestone on the Coast than to showcase two of our State League Women’s Senior AFL teams.
The magnificent Maroochydore Multisports Complex is home to the largest Sunshine Coast AFL club, Maroochydore Roos, and an ideal place to host a family-friendly, quality sporting event. Saturday August 5th at 11am, this inaugural Women’s Cup between Maroochydore and University of QLD women’s teams, will commence with a special opening ceremony followed by free kids activities and a high quality game of Australian Rules Football. Half time will see a showcasing of Youth Girls AFL teams and after the women’s game concludes and the Cup is presented, the Senior men take to the field at 2pm. Fun and food attractions will be plentiful for everyone and make for a great day out.
With women’s AFL attracting massive attention since the National AFL Competition added extra teams in 2017, including the Brisbane Lions, women and girls of all ages are now competing in huge numbers in the sport. The age group is very varied, with many women never having been given the chance to play when they were younger and as one player said, “My brothers played but I was never allowed”. In an inaugural clash with Brisbane based side, UQ Lions (University of QLD), the 50th Anniversary Women’s Cup will showcase the talent of AFL-loving women on the Coast.
To attract all sports lovers on the day and create a carnival atmosphere, there will be several activities going on. Hot 91.1 FM will be broadcasting live from the ground from 10 AM, food stalls, a jumping castle, face painting, free kids activities, the White Ribbon Sprint and a handball competition to name a few.
The main event kicks off at 11.45. Youth girl’s teams from Maroochydore, Noosa, Hinterland and Glasshouse will battle it out at half time of the women’s game. At the conclusion of the main game around 1.30pm there will be a special guest to present the winner with the 50th Anniversary Women’s Cup.
Proceeds from the day are being raised for White Ribbon Sunshine Coast.
