CHECK OUT THIS WEEKS RESULTS...
Our Roos women and senior men played 4 games against Yeronga South Brisbane, with our Colts taking on arch-enemy (and Premiers) Southport.
Coach Phil Birchmore reports: -
“The lads were up against the best Colts team in the state. We knew we’d have to play at our peak for 4 quarters to win. A strong wind to the Bradman Ave end made sure both defences had to stand strong. Southport skipped away to a 3 goal lead at three quarter time, with Matt Holt, Jordan Little and Tommy Griffiths solid for the Roos. Second quarter was our turn with the wind, and we told the boys we had to hit the scoreboard to put the pressure back on. Corey Bakes, Joshy Hawksworth and Blake Ryan lifted, and we went in at halftime a goal up. The third quarter mirrored the first and Southport just kept hitting the scoreboard.
The Roos defence stood strong, but we were held goaless for a second quarter. We spoke about how we needed to lower the eyes and just keep pressing, and we can just run over them. Southport came out firing in the last quarter and kicked the first goal. It took us until the 10 minute mark to kick our first goal……………….but then we took over, kicking 4.10 for the quarter to record a great win by 7 points. Jacko Bury, Noah Cumberland and Sam Butler led the charge. This win was a top team effort, and showed the character of all team members. Jordan, Tommy G, Bakesy and Hawky were 4 quarter contributors, and Blake Ryan stood tall up forward and kicked some clutch goals”.
Pus and Russ’s Ressies jumped out of the blocks with a 7 goal first quarter and continued on to record a 20 goal annihilation. A welcome return to top form for Ren Anderson (5 goals), with leading goal-kicker Josh Kelleher continuing on his merry way with another 5. Smoothy (4 goals) and Jy Bennet (3) were amongst the goals and better players too. Top votes probably go to Mitch Green and Zach Carlson who had outstanding games.
Cadz and his Seniors had to fight every inch of the way to run out winners by 17 points. Yeronga South Brisbane fielded one of their stronger teams. The Roos defence, led by Nige Baker, Pearso, and Rabs, was terrific all day. JR put in another blinder and was ably backed up by Jack Gale, Dzuf, Sam Mac, and first-gamer Nathan Selleck. All in all, a solid team effort.
Our women battled valiantly in both the QWAFL and in Division 1. The more experienced women were given a lesson by a very polished, top of the ladder, Yeronga South Brisbane.
Many of the women playing in Division 1 are playing for the first time, and are learning game by game. Their endeavour is a tribute to the Roos coaches.
The overall prospects for the men’s teams look good at the half-way mark of the season.
Colts and Ressies on top, Seniors holding down second.
Our Thirds had a bye this week, so it’s a chance to catch up on where (coach) Leigh Roberts thinks his team is at after last week’s 98 point win over Gympie:
“A big step in the right direction, after a tough game the week before in a battle with Pomona for 3 quarters before opening the game up and delivering a 4th quarter of a game style we are striving to achieve ………setting us up to head north to Gympie with some momentum.
With our key indicators in hand to stay in the grind early play there inside scrappy style and win that contest before we explode and tear the game open with some gut running and possession footy. We lost a couple of men early with Bevis a small quad twinge and Camo and badly rolled ankle so to maintain that level of intensity and gut running whilst short was very pleasing from the group Leigh Roberts said! Really was a fantastic team performance filled with individuals that took some ownership on their games to deliver some form for themselves and team mates. With a 98 point win as you could image was plenty of footy heading inside our forward 50 and to our credit we maintained our discipline to keep our forward line structure open resulting in our forward six enjoying some scoring spoils with Muddy 2, Pykey 2 from the pockets and Jacko slotting 6 from full forward with single goals from our HF line Stains, Jezza and Flano and our wings Birdy and Zac. Our midfield were intense all day enjoying plenty of footy with Macca a new inclusion tough and hard all day with Eppa and Zeke working tirelessly around the very inform ruckman big Scooby.
Our back 6 !!!!! Well what do I say to keep a side to 15 points for the days was exception with the old firm Jye, Toohey and Elliot controlling the HB lines opposition forward entries by propelling them and attacking made for a very long days for Gympies forward line allowing our last line of defence Madness and the Simmo bros to ensure our defensive and offensive press was maintained all day. The bye this week for us then the rep round so two weeks of just hard work at training as we pre-pare for the business end of the season.
Up the Roos !!!!!”
