ROOsults Round 10

ROOS ROUNDUP – 17/6/17

The weekend saw 5 of our 6 teams playing at home, with our only away team playing at Pomona. It was a predominantly successful weekend for the Roo's with almost all our teams recording victories over the weekend, and all by strong margins. Match day reports by our club coaches are recorded below. From a social point of view, the club held a sponsors luncheon, with guest speaker Richard Champion entertaining a full house of over 80 guest's. Champs gave a great insight of his days leading up to, and during his AFL career. Time seemed to go way too quick. Champs's stories about his playing days, and the characters he'd come across during his time in footy could have gone on for hours, but we had a game of footy to watch at 2.00pm! In true Richard Champion style, he finished his guest speaking duties with a customary song and the audience reaction was so good, he rolled out another! Well done Champs, a lot of positive comments followed during the day. A great day had by all, and a big thank you goes out to our resident cooks - Cumbo, Timmy Johnson and their apprentice for the day, Tony 'BUZZ' Williams, for preparing a delicious roast lunch for the 80 strong crowd.

ROOS MATCH REPORTS

QFA Colts v Redland The day started with the Colts at 9.30am with our lads playing good footy of late, and Redland the same. Their position on the ladder suggested an easy win was at hand, but we knew that was not going to be the case.  In a low scoring, scrappy affair the Roo's boys lead by 15 points at half time. The lead stretched to 20 by 3qtr time, but it took until the last qtr for the Roo lads to hit their straps and kick away with a 49 point victory: 09.18-72 to 03.04-23 For the Roo's first gamer Tom Ansell booted 3 goals along with Tom Holt. Best players on the day were: Kurtis Ronalds, Jai Larkins, Matt Harris, Jordan Little and Tarj Townson. Big game next week with the boys taking on second placed Aspley. Good Luck. QFA Div 1 – Reserves v Burleigh Our reserves team seems to be going from strength to strength. Another dominant performance as the boys steamed rolled Burleigh by 116 points. The 2's are on top of the ladder, a game clear with a staggering 389.49 %. As the score would suggest, the game was never in doubt. The Roo's kicked 19.14 to Burleigh's 2 goals straight. We had 10 individual goal kickers, with Ren Anderson and Brad Dolley topping the list with 4 each. Best players for the day were: Zach Carlson, Tim Widdowson, Brady McCosker, Brad Dolley, Josh Keleher and Tim Herbert. Speaking with coach Dave Hulsman after the game, he made comment that Zach Carlson's game was as good a game he's ever seem in reserves footy. Must have been a ripper Zach - well done mate. QFA Div 1 - Seniors v Burleigh The Roo’s seniors met Burleigh  for the second time this year and in front of a parochial home crowd took the chocolates by 49 points. Skill errors and inaccuracy in front of goals looked like it was going to prove costly before settling and coming home strongly in the last stanza. Final scores 14-19 -103 to 6-11-47. In a hard fought tussle, Burleigh stayed in the contest for most of the game  before an 8 goal last quarter led by 6 goal forward Paul Bevan and supported by hard working CHF Lochie Laing, got Maroochydore home. The midfield battle was tight with In form on ballers, Sam MacKenzie, Harry Wilson and Jackson Ryan, working tirelessly driving the ball forward. Key Backs, Nigel Baker, Brent Pearson and captain Daniel Dzufer, continued to repel attacks and in the end their run and carry  from behind the ball was instrumental.. A good victory setting up a crucial home turf clash with fellow final aspirants Coorparoo next week. QWAFL v Zillmere A mid year bye and a team re-set over the past two weeks has shown early positive signs for the QWAFL ladies. Coming up against the undermanned Zillmere gave the girls a good opportunity to put the new plans into practice. A very disciplined, selfless team approach had the ladyroos in control for the entire game & able to execute the style of team defence we're looking to build on. Several of our youngsters had a great game, Jemma Abbott finished with 6 goals, Tiffy D & Shania controlled the half back line with Shannon Banksy while Brooke Randall showed real class and composure for a 16 year old. Speedsters Woodsy, Spud, Millsy & the Twins saw us win plenty of early ball from Nanine & Kristy's ruckwork and gave us repeated forward entries. Janelle enjoyed some well earned time in the middle after another rock solid first half at full back. The next 3 weeks will be against teams in red hot form, so intensity and discipline need to be high.  Goal Kickers: J. Abbott 6, J. Parsons 4, K. Sills 3, K. Woods 2, J. Sills 2, R. Mills, S. Campbell Best Players:K. Surman, S. Campbell, N. Stewart, K. Woods, J. Abbott, S. Jones  QWFA Div 1 v Burleigh  The Roos ladies in this team have been doing it a bit tough, finding it challenging to get the wins on the board despite playing some wonderfully spirited team footy. This week they were very undermanned after losing key players to injury but their courage, persistence and determination was as strong as ever against a tough Burleigh side. A couple of girls had their first run in the side, Kodie Sills and Chantelle Boxer, and with so many girls new to AFL in the team it is great to see their improvement each week. Keep on learning girls!  Best players: Belinda Thompson, Bella Freeman, Morgan Whitney, Chloe Thatcher, Elly Jenkinson, Bri Noel. Goal scorers: Bella Freeman SCWB Div 1 v Pomona On Saturday, the Roos headed north to take on the Mountain Men at Pomona in our round 10 clash needing not only the points but a percentage to see our position in the top four solidified. The challenge for us as a team/squad was after not playing for 3 weeks (due to rep footy and bye's) and with 12 unavailable/injured players was to replicate were we left off 3 weeks ago, dismantling Gympie by 98 points.  So with a new look side for the clash v Pomona, I was satisfied that with our structures in place we work on together as a squad that guys coming into the side would play the role required to suit our game styles and structures.  The day started as expected hot, tuff and a real battle on the inside with contested possession type footy with our lads being heavily instructed to stay in the grind early, play, match, then exceed their style of footy before we branch into our exciting open brand. We did this in the first quarter and we knew by ¼ time if we could put some score board pressure along with matching their inside game that we would buy our time to pounce in the second 1/4  to launch our attack.  The second ¼ saw us take control of the game around the ground controlling possession slowing the game up and working on running them off their feet by chasing Roos with leather in hand. Also knowing Pomona as we do, with their fitness and discipline slipping tensions would rise and that they did !!!!  To our credit our boys know they are there to play footy and once that mental battle is won and points under control we can then ensure a percentage win is there for us to take in the second half.  The 3rd ¼ we started really honing some our skills moving the footy with ease almost too much ease taking the finger of the trigger a little controlling possession without score board results only kicking 3 in this quarter.  The last we ensured we caught up to inflict the pressure and intensity we slightly dropped off in the 3rd to finish the game strong coming away with an 80 point win. Great team performance with our back 6 being real strong and accountable all day with Luke Simmonds from a back pocket really setting the tempo on how its done. Our midfield group Scooby, Zeke, Stainsby and inclusions for the day Gringles and Milsey ( thanks lads) really did set the tone with tuff footy and clearances ensure we get first use of the footy and down forward the return of Weckert after 12 months off with a knee was great to see him snag a few sausage rolls. Great performance no passengers and we look forward to a massive test next Week with Bay Power at home who are sitting in 3rd position on the ladder, a position we can make ours with a solid win...... Till next week cheers Leroy. ** Rep footy saw the Maroochydore Roos have a strong presence with 7 representatives being selected to play in that Fraser Coast rep side to take on the best of the best in the Coast & Wide Bay comps. Our Roos featured very strongly with Elliot Prior, Jeremy Cockram, Scooby Morris, Jack Henning, Zac Epstein. Michael Epstein and Mitch Bird all playing to dominate and return an 80 point win for us Southern Coasties, well done men.
